    Negotiating Level Field of Trade with the EU

    The American Meat Institute (AMI) has submitted comments to the Office of the United State Trade Representative (USTR) concerning the promotion of U.S. – European Union (EU) Regulatory Compatibility under the auspices of the joint High Level Working Group on Jobs and Growth, the High Level Regulatory Cooperation Forum and the Transatlantic Economic Council. AMI’s comments urge USTR to adhere to the “single undertaking” approach to trade negotiations in contrast to an approach that would allow negotiations for each sector to move forward at its own pace without regard to progress or failures in other sectors....More

    What’s Going on in Canada?

    The Canadian pork industry is making news a lot lately—and the news is not necessarily good. Reports last week following a Canadian Pork Council meeting talked about potential threats to the entire Canadian pork supply chain if too many producers were to exit the industry. I always want to know the “rest of the story,” beyond what the news releases are telling me. Today I sought some perspective from Karl Kynoch, Baldur, Manitoba, chairman of the Manitoba Pork Council.     Senator Hails Passage of Panama Trade Pact

    Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-MT) hailed the announcement Oct. 22 that the U.S.-Panama Free Trade Agreement (FTA) will go into effect on Oct. 31. The FTA will provide U.S. exporters access to Panama’s $20.6 billion services market as well as more than $15 billion in infrastructure projects in Panama for American businesses....More

    Canadian Packers Interested in Ailing Hog Producers

    Two major Canadian pork processors are among those expressing interest in Canada's second-biggest hog producer, Big Sky Farms, which is looking for new ownership after soaring feed costs left it unable to pay its bills, according to a recent report filed by Reuters. Big Sky, which produces about a million pigs per year and is based near Humboldt, Saskatchewan, entered receivership in early September. Manitoba-based hog producer Puratone Corp. is also up for sale, after entering court protection from creditors last month....More

    Tools Show How to Market Hogs Efficiently

    Kansas State University (KSU) offers two different tools that can help pork producers determine optimal market weights for their hogs – factoring in current high feed costs, according to Mike Tokach, KSU Extension swine specialist.     How Have the Wheels Come Off?

    After my effort last week to put fall supplies in what I still believe is a correct and lower context, federally-inspected (FI) slaughter exploded to 2.265 million head, 4.6% higher than the week before and nearly 7% larger than last year.     NPPC Applauds Wholesale Pork Reporting Rule

    The National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) applauded today’s release of a final rule to implement the wholesale pork reporting provision of the federal mandatory price reporting law, which requires meat packers to report price data to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS). NPPC worked to get the reporting provision included in legislation that reauthorized in September 2010 the Livestock Mandatory Reporting Act and helped develop the regulation as part of a negotiated rulemaking process....More

    WASDE Report Hikes Grain Price Forecasts

    The World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) report issued this morning by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) calls for record-high prices for corn and soybeans as extreme heat and dryness continues across the Plains and Corn Belt. Corn production for 2012/13 is projected sharply lower at 2.2 billion bushels below last month’s estimates, reducing yield projections by 22.6 bushels/acre to 123.4 bushels/acre.     It is almost unbelievable to think that at the beginning of June, corn prices were $4.00/bu. Now, prices in southern Minnesota have nearly doubled and new crop corn was priced at over $7.60/bu. on Friday, July 20. Soybean meal costs have gone from $380/ton in June to trading at $540/ton.
