‘Chew on This Tour’ Visits World Pork Expo

The “Chew on This Tour,” which visited World Pork Expo last week in Des Moines, IA, featuring its highly visible, shiny red tractor trailer, is spreading the message about food safety and quality, and sharing information about the use of technology in food production on the Drive to Feed the World.

The Chew on This Tour is a unique, interactive road show traveling the nation to heighten awareness about one of the biggest problems facing the world today: hunger. The tour will be stopping at feedmills, universities, fairs and civic events around the country.

USDA Report Downgrades Corn Crop

USDA’s World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) released this week lowers the prospects for feedgrain supplies as delayed plantings reduce yield prospects for corn. Projected corn production is lowered 135 million bushels to 14.0 billion bushels. Average yield is projected at 156.5 bushels per acre, a drop of 1.5 bushels from last month’s projections.

Latest Corn Planting Report Shows Shortfall

With USDA’s Crop Progress report showing that 91% of the corn crop was planted as of June 2, questions remain about whether planting delays will significantly reduce the number of acres that will be harvested this fall.

Daily Livestock Report (www.dailylivestockreport.com) authors Steve Meyer and Len Steiner point out that corn planted after June 1 increases the chances of lower yields.

“You are not finished planting corn. Your fields are saturated. Rain is coming in torrents. More rain is in the forecast. You know the final planting date for crop insurance is (past) (in a few days). You may have already lost 10-15% of your potential yield. What is the first thing you do?

Phibro Animal Health Corporation (Phibro) has donated a gift for a new Swine Medicine Education Center (SMEC) Student Support Fund of $5,000 annually that will provide financial assistance to offset costs visiting veterinary students from across the nation incur while participating in swine veterinary rotations at SMEC.

Pivotal Period Sets Hog Producers’ Future

The next 60 days will be pivotal for the direction of the U.S. pork industry, says Purdue University agricultural economist Chris Hurt.

Come the end of July, corn pollination will be finished, and crop farmers will know the fate of the corn crop, and with it the chances for the industry to move forward profitably.

Hansen Foundation’s Pork Donations Ease Seasonal Slump

The Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation/Iowa Select Farms is donating 6,000 fresh, boneless pork loins to more than 40 food banks and pantries that will distribute the meat to local families in need in 26 Iowa counties. The contribution of 27,000 lb. of pork valued at $61,020 comes at a time when food banks and pantries typically run low on donations and food supplies.

Delivery of the nutritious meat began May 20 and will continue through May 28 to help feed Iowans this spring and early summer.

Veterinarians Urged to Attend Speaker Training at Expo

The American Association of Swine Veterinarians (AASV) is urging its members to participate in Operation Main Street (OMS) training during World Pork Expo in Des Moines, IA.

In 2011, the AASV and the National Pork Board partnered to train veterinarians as OMS speakers with a goal to schedule a speaker at all 28 schools of veterinary medicine with messages about the swine industry. Since then, the AASV has trained 41 veterinarians and scheduled speakers at 24 of the 28 schools reaching more than 5,000 students through the OMS program.
