Tips for Handling Early Weaned Pigs http://nationalhogfarmer.com/animal-well-being/tips-handling-early-weaned-pigs <div class="field-deck"> Weaning pigs early in the face of PEDV requires TLC. </div> <div class="node-body article-body">When pork producers experience an outbreak of porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) in a herd, a common strategy used to stop the disease from spreading is to quickly wean all piglets who have not yet contracted the disease and move them out of the facility. Consequently, some piglets are moving to the nursery as young as 7 days of age. Weaning younger, more vulnerable piglets means extra attention to detail and some tender loving care (TLC) is needed to get pigs off to a good start.</div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div><p><a href="http://nationalhogfarmer.com/animal-well-being/tips-handling-early-weaned-pigs" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://nationalhogfarmer.com/animal-well-being/tips-handling-early-weaned-pigs#comments Animal Well-Being Food Animal Report Health Animal Welfare Fri, 05 Dec 2014 16:12:00 +0000 52661 at http://nationalhogfarmer.com Photo courtesy of the National Pork Board. ‘World-Class Farm’ Achieved with Proper Pig Care http://nationalhogfarmer.com/animal-well-being/world-class-farm-achieved-proper-pig-care <div class="node-body article-body">Through proper management swine producers should be able to expect less than 2% stillbirths, less than 5% preweaning mortality, weaning 14 pigs per litter and achieving 35 pigs per sow per year. </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div><p><a href="http://nationalhogfarmer.com/animal-well-being/world-class-farm-achieved-proper-pig-care" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://nationalhogfarmer.com/animal-well-being/world-class-farm-achieved-proper-pig-care#comments Animal Well-Being Business Food Animal Report Health Wed, 03 Dec 2014 04:03:00 +0000 52621 at http://nationalhogfarmer.com Lameness in Growing Pigs Is a Continuous Challenge http://nationalhogfarmer.com/health/lameness-growing-pigs-continuous-challenge <div class="field-byline"> By Brad Leuwerke, DVM, St. Peter, MN </div> <div class="node-body article-body">I recently had the opportunity to spend several days alongside a senior veterinary student who was participating in a two-week rotation with our practice. Our focus those days was primarily nursery and grow-finish health, and we were able to visit a variety of sites. During the drive home on Friday afternoon, we attempted to wrap up our week, discussing all of the things we’d seen. When the student commented, “I think we talked about lameness, arthritis or stiff pigs within every barn we were in this week,” the conversation quickly evolved, and we spent a majority of our trip on this very challenging subject.</div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div><p><a href="http://nationalhogfarmer.com/health/lameness-growing-pigs-continuous-challenge" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://nationalhogfarmer.com/health/lameness-growing-pigs-continuous-challenge#comments Health Mon, 01 Dec 2014 21:57:00 +0000 52601 at http://nationalhogfarmer.com Nanoparticles Show Promise as Biosecurity Tool http://nationalhogfarmer.com/health/nanoparticles-show-promise-biosecurity-tool <div class="field-byline"> By M.
