Mercy for Animals released undercover video taken on a Colorado hog farm. An expert panel, sponsored by the Center for Food Integrity and consisting of respected veterinarians and an animal ethicist, reviewed the video footage and noted that a lot of context is missing from what is presented. It is also not known when the video footage was taken, or what type of care the animals that are seen for a brief period of time were receiving beyond the moment depicted in each particular scene. As a contrast to the allegations of inadequate animal care, I would like to point out a couple of examples reinforcing my belief that our industry really does care—a lot.

National Hog Farmer Blog

http://nationalhogfarmer.com/blog/responsible-pork-industry-cares-about-its-animals#comments Animal Well-Being Business Food Animal Report National Hog Farmer Blog Fri, 05 Dec 2014 16:50:00 +0000 52671 at http://nationalhogfarmer.com Tips for Handling Early Weaned Pigs http://nationalhogfarmer.com/animal-well-being/tips-handling-early-weaned-pigs
Weaning pigs early in the face of PEDV requires TLC.

When pork producers experience an outbreak of porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) in a herd, a common strategy used to stop the disease from spreading is to quickly wean all piglets who have not yet contracted the disease and move them out of the facility. Consequently, some piglets are moving to the nursery as young as 7 days of age. Weaning younger, more vulnerable piglets means extra attention to detail and some tender loving care (TLC) is needed to get pigs off to a good start.

http://nationalhogfarmer.com/animal-well-being/tips-handling-early-weaned-pigs#comments Animal Well-Being Food Animal Report Health Animal Welfare Fri, 05 Dec 2014 16:12:00 +0000 52661 at http://nationalhogfarmer.com Photo courtesy of the National Pork Board.
