Superior Young Swine Producer Award winners announced

URBANA – Top youth in the swine industry competed for the 2010 Superior Young Swine Producer awards at the Illinois State Fair last week.

The top five youth receiving $1,000 scholarships from Archer Daniels Midland in Decatur and a plaque from the Land of Lincoln Purebred Livestock Breeders Association and the Illinois State Fair include Lucas Helton of Strasburg, Ashley Kauffman of Danvers, Wade Springer of Hopedale, Luke Rincker of Strasburg, and Amy Loschen of Kempton.

In the swine management test, Loschen, Rincker and Springer sorted themselves to the top and received plaques for their achievements. In the skill-a-thon, Renae Halverson of DeKalb, Kauffman, and Loschen made the Top Three. In the judging competition, Shelby Boose of Georgetown, Kauffman, and Loschen took home the highest honors.

Dan Jennings, University of Illinois Extension Animal Systems Educator, said, “This contest provides youth with an opportunity to showcase their knowledge of the industry while competing for valuable scholarships to help them pursue their career goals.”
