The Rozeboom family from Wisconsin had just finished showing heavyweight Duroc barrows in the National Junior Show when they stopped by the National Hog Farmer (NHF) booth. Kelton (left) said the coolest thing he had seen so far was a massage chair in a booth. His mother, Gretchen, was impressed by all the people attending World Pork Expo. Landrey (right) said she liked seeing the trailers at the show.
But wait--there are more Rozebooms! Owen Rozeboom (left) missed the first picture, but joined the conversation (and picture) a bit later. He said he liked seeing cool trucks at World Pork Expo. WE like seeing the brotherly love with big brother Kelton. We also liked his "Hog Wash" t-shirt!
Now here's a neat "how-I-got-to-World Pork Expo" story. Julia Holen (left) came to World Pork Expo with her father, Doug (right) from Fergus Falls, MN, to watch the Duroc show. Doug had promised this trip to Julia as a Christmas gift. The next stop was going to be a college visit to Iowa State University where Julia is investigating a possible future major in animal science. Roger and Dana Johnson came to World Pork Expo from Denison, IA, to attend meetings related to Roger's job with Farmland Foods. Roger visited Expo for the first time in 1990 and notes many things have stayed the same over his years coming to the show, and many are different. "It's interesting how many things have come back around," he notes. "The pendulum seems to swing both ways." Dana gave us a wry smile and said she was hoping her time at the show would yield a "find" to add to her refrigerator magnet collection.
Levi Wollman (left), Rick Tschetter and Mike Wollman had a specific list of products and technology to investigate at World Pork Expo. Levi was looking at farrowing house floor products. Rick was gathering information about automatic hog sorters. Mike was also interested in flooring, and was researching feed processing systems. The group said they had been impressed by the Crystal Springs wet/dry feeder, ProSorter Software and Easy Automation software. The group hails from Ethan, SD.
Caton Howard (left), Brandon Hill, and Tony Grandstaff are producers from Michigan and Indiana affiliated with Dykhuis Farms, a 16,000-sow farrow-to-finish operation. Caton said he came to World Pork Expo to collect new information. Brandon was looking forward to networking opportunities and Tony said he was going to make the most of his time off. The group was chuckling about some impressive shirts they had seen in the Merck booth. Tony said new AI technology from IMV had captured his attention. Joey Spicola, Sr., came to World Pork Expo from Tampa, FL, to introduce his ClicRWeight Weighing System to the pork industry. "I'm a techie guy and had hog farmers calling me to ask if I could help fill a need. It took me six years to develop this product," he said. The ClicRWeight is part of the National Hog Farmer New Product Tour this year.
Richard VanDonkersgoed said he felt the need for a road trip and ended up at World Pork Expo. The pork producer from Ontario, Canada, had come to the show to learn about new pork industry innovations.
"I am here to look at anything new that I haven't heard about yet," said Nathan Adema. The farrow-to-finish producer came to World Pork Expo from Ontario, Canada.He said he was very interested learning more about free-access dry sow stalls.
Denian Huang (left), and Jinyoung Yang are agricultural trainees from China who are working on a farrowing farm in Fairbury, NE, as part of a one-year training program. Denian said he came to the show to learn more about the advanced technology and equipment on display. Jinyoung was hoping to learn more about farrowing equipment and technology.
Iowa Pork Queen Lindsay Reth, Manchester, IA, stopped by to visit the National Hog Farmer booth. She's in the middle of her one-year term representing Iowa's pork industry. Her World Pork Expo duties on the first day of the show included making and handing out pork sandwiches. She comes from a farrow-to-finish operation that is transitioning to wean-to-finish production.
We asked National Hog Farmer booth visitors to share the main motivator that got them to journey to Des Moines for World Pork Expo this year. They also told us about the coolest thing they had seen so far on the first day of Expo.
