AgVantage introduces the WeighBetter Drinker System, which provides a constant supply of water to pigs. The drinker utilizes a vaccuum valve for dispensing water into compartmentalized water trays. An adjustable pipe regulates the flow of water into the trays, based on size of the pig and time of the year. The trays provide pigs with a constant reservoir of water, and eliminate the need for pigs to learn how to use nipple drinkers and cup waterers. The drinker boosts water consumption; research shows that pigs using the WeighBetter system drank 25% more water when outside temperatures exceeded 80° F, the company says.

Ingelvac PRRS MLV vaccine from Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica, Inc. has been granted approval by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for whole-herd vaccination in herds positive for porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS). The new product claim helps producers achieve a simultaneous and high level of immunity for the entire breeding herd when dealing with PRRS. The goal of whole-herd PRRS vaccination is to eliminate any subpopulations within the herd that might infect naïve pigs in the same population, says Reid Philips, DVM, company manager, swine respiratory technical services. A whole herd “double mass” vaccination strategy has been effective in stabilizing acute or chronic herds compared to traditional vaccine protocols, says Tom Gillespie, DVM, Rensselaer, IN. He recommends vaccinating the entire female breeding herd with Ingelvac PRRS MLV twice, 30 days apart, followed by a single vaccination of that group quarterly.

The Sow Lift from Gro Master Inc. prevents crushed piglets by elevating the sow while she is standing. A pedal-triggered air lift system immediately raises the sow 10 in. above the creep area when she stands up. The crate is slowly lowered to creep level as soon as the sow lies down. This action prevents piglets from getting underneath the sow and eliminates crushed and maimed pigs. Tests show the Sow Lift with the Crystal Spring farrowing crate increases production by over 1.5 pigs/sow/year. The Sow Lift adapts to most any size pit, flooring style and farrowing crate.

Nutrient Management Technologies (NMT), Ltd. announces a cost-effective, environmentally sound method of manure treatment that meets new nutrient management regulations. The NMT System recycles both solid and liquid manure, dramatically reducing pathogen, nutrient and odor content in the treatment process. Solids are converted to organic fertilizer. Liquids are treated in a biological reactor using “friendly” bacteria to produce a low-viscosity fluid which is then purified for use in barn flushing or irrigation systems.
