The Irish Farmers Association (IFA) “DNA Certified” program will use IdentiGEN’s DNA technology to profile and develop a database that contains the DNA of every Irish boar in the country. Both the IFA and other industry organizations will be able to use the database to reinforce the Irish origins of fresh and processed pork to help meeet consumer demand for locally produced pork products.
”This groundbreaking initiative introduces a new standard of integrity to the Irish pork sector,” said Dr. Ronan Loftus, Director and co-founder of IdentiGEN. “Globally, this is the first time that a national DNA database of all breeding stock has been established to provide unequivocal guarantees of product origin, potentially creating new opportunities to market Irish pork internationally.”
IFA National Pigs and Pigmeat Chairman Tim Cullinan said “Pig producers and consumers will be secure in the knowledge that solid science is determining the precise origin of pork.”
