Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is currently revising the National 590 Nutrient Management Technical Standard. The proposed new standard was posted on Jan. 11, 2011, in the Federal Register. The due date for comments is Feb. 25, 2011.
According to the Federal Register, the 590 Nutrient Management Standard has been updated to promote enhanced nutrient management planning activities at the state level. The standard delivers the minimum requirements for nutrient planning associated with USDA programs. Focus has been added regarding erosion control, efficient nutrient use, adaptive nitrogen management tactics, tile drainage and better management of nutrient application.

States are expected to revise their 590 standards based on the finalized 590 Nutrient Management Technical Standard.
