Pork Board Picks Leader

A Wisconsin pork producer has been elected president of the National Pork Board. Lynn Harrison from Elk Mound, serving his second, three-year term on the Pork Board, began a one-year term as president on Aug. 1.

Steve Weaver, Elk Grove, CA, pork producer, was elected to serve a one-year term as vice president. The elections were conducted at the Pork Board's summer meeting in St. Louis, MO.

Harrison and his wife, Pat, own Harrison Enterprises Inc. in northwest Wisconsin, a feeder pig finisher that markets 10,000 hogs/year. His farm is one of eight Wisconsin Discovery Farms, which are part of an environmental research program run by the University of Wisconsin.

“My introduction to the work of the National Pork Board was directly related to my interest in the environment,” says Harrison, who was recognized as one of the 2002 Environmental Stewards of the Pork Industry. (See insert in the Sept. 15, 2002, issue of National Hog Farmer).

Harrison still has a passion for environmental issues, but he also wants to work on building domestic demand for pork and to develop overseas markets.

Weaver, a former banker, got involved in the pork industry helping his children raise a few pigs for 4-H and FFA projects. He and his wife, Pat, now operate a 60-sow, farrow-to-feeder pig herd that produces 1,200 pigs a year on their farm near Sacramento, CA. He is active in other farm groups and serves as the CEO/manager of the Sacramento County Fair. Weaver was elected to his second, three-year term on the Pork Board and serves on the producer and state relations, swine health and animal welfare committees.
