The results of pork check-off-funded research initiatives on swine euthanasia will be discussed at a Feb. 1 Swine Euthanasia Research Workshop/Webinar from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Embassy Suites, Des Moines, IA.

An overview of euthanasia research efforts will include talks on mechanical methods. Sarah Probst-Miller, DVM, Carthage (IL) Veterinary Service, Ltd., will cover electrocution; Suzanne Millman, DVM, Iowa State University, will talk on captive bolt technology and also on Zephyr non-penetrating captive bolt.

Terry Engle of Colorado State University will review novel methods with high-altitude hypoxia.

Discussing carbon dioxide and gas mixtures will be Mhairi Sutherland, formerly of Texas Tech University and now working at Ag Research New Zealand looking at gas combinations; and Larry Sadler of Iowa State University focusing on gas administration rate using the smart box.

Sherrie Niekamp, National Pork Board, will provide closing comments.
