Smithfield Foods, Inc. and its subsidiaries are donating truckloads of lunchmeat, ice and water to help relief efforts for victims of Hurricane Katrina.
Subsidiaries Farmland Foods, John Morrell and Smithfield Packing Company are shipping more than 143,000 lb. of ready-to-eat lunchmeat to America’s Second Harvest food banks in the Baton Rouge, LA, area.
The donated meat, along with 80,000 lb. of ice and 32,000, 16-oz. bottles of water are being shipped in six Smithfield Foods trucks.
America’s Second Harvest, the largest hunger-relief agency in the United States, will be distributing Smithfield’s donations at sites along the path of the hurricane.
Also, Smithfield Packing Company of Smithfield, VA, has committed two trailer loads or 65,000 lb. of meat to the relief effort.
