The European Union (EU) has adopted final regulations completing the phase-out of the routine use of antibiotics to promote growth in animals.

The action meets the EU’s ultimate goal of a total ban on use of feed additives as growth promoters to strengthen food safety and combat antimicrobial resistance.

The regulation will go into effect later this year after publication in the EU’s Official Journal.

Earlier, the EU banned antibiotics used in human medicine from being added to animal feed.
