Merck Animal Health Introduces Next Generation of Circovirus Protection

Merck Animal Health has introduced the first porcine circovirus Type 2 (PCV2) vaccine, Circumvent PCV G2, for use in pigs as early as 3 days of age in a one- or two-dose formulation. The vaccine offers five-month duration of immunity (DOI), at least 25% longer than any other PCV2 vaccine on the market, the company claims.

"Vaccines with longer DOI can provide better protection and potentially reduce mortality just prior to marketing, where the loss of a pig approaches market value," says Derald Holtkamp, DVM, Iowa State University. "In a barn of 1,000 pigs, if just one, 270-lb. pig is saved, and carcass prices are at $1 per pound, the benefit is more than $200 or $.20 per pig."
