North American Preview Archives by Date Last Friday’s quarterly Hogs and Pigs report did little to allay fears that the North American pork industry is in for another year of economic difficulty.... In last week’s Preview, I pointed out that one of the factors in lower-than-expected hog prices this summer is being driven by some unexpected production.... This week’s World Pork Expo was far from a celebration of, or by, the nation’s pork industry. Old friendships were renewed, some business was transacted and knowledge ... One of the big advantages of the new Weekly Preview publication schedule is that readers will get fresh data on prior week supplies and prices ... It appears that the H1N1 influenza scare is dissipating, but not before it has wreaked havoc in pork and hog markets, and left pork producers and packers in an even deeper financial bind. The damage has been significant, especially when piled on top of what has happened over the past 18 months.... To say it has been a tough week in the pork business would be a monumental understatement. And the pain is worse when it is completely undeserved.... It has been a tough week for pork cutout values. After showing some signs of expected seasonal strength last week, the cutout value fell from Monday through Wednesday, before gaining... There have been several reports that Canadian-born market hogs are being regularly discounted by U.S. packers. I’m sure that some of those reports are based on fact. But the entire situation...
