Legislation would ban horse slaughter and horse exports for slaughter

The “Safeguard American Food Exports Act of 2015” would ban horse slaughter in the United States and also the export of live horses for slaughter to other countries for the purpose of human consumption.

The legislation was introduced by Congressmen Frank Guinta (R-NH) and Jan Schakowsky (D-IL). Currently the sale of horsemeat for consumption in the United States is prohibited, but horses may be exported for slaughter.
