The American Association of Swine Veterinarians (AASV) submitted a resolution on sow housing that was passed recently by the American Veterinary Medical Association's (AVMA) delegate members.

Research clearly shows there is support for the use of individual gestation stalls as a humane housing option, provided there is adequate animal care, says Dave Madsen, DVM, past president of the AASV.

The AVMA resolution supports pregnant sow housing that minimizes aggression and competition and protects sows from environmental extremes. It also reduces exposure to hazards that may cause injuries, provides daily access to food and water and facilitates observation of daily activities.
