Automatic Sorting System

Farmweld, Inc. introduced its new FAST (Farmweld Automatic Sorting Technology) at World Pork Expo in Des Moines, IA. FAST accurately weighs and sorts pigs at marketing so producers can better match select animals to packer pricing programs. It also allows producers to routinely monitor pig weights throughout the feeding period. With FAST, pigs are housed in conventional size barns with large pens holding up to 500-600 head. Each pen has two basic areas — a loafing area and a food court. The scale is located at the fence line between the two areas. On sorting days, the scale automatically weighs pigs, then routes heavy pigs (based on a preset weight cutoff) to a holding area. Light pigs are sent to the food court. One-way gates allow pigs in the food court to return to the loafing area at will.

Premix Feed Products

Land O'Lakes Farmland Feed has launched two new Distiller's Dried Grains with Solubles (DDGS) premix swine feed products — Golden DDGS LG Premix and LG Premix with lysine — to be used as part of a complete grow-finish diet. The company is monitoring and testing DDGS to maintain consistent levels of crude protein, crude fat and fiber, moisture, calcium, phosphorus and lysine so producers don't have to take on this time-consuming task. Currently, Land O'Lakes Farmland Feed recommends that producers feed up to 5% Golden DDGS in starter diets, up to 10% in grow-finish and sow lactation diets and up to 20% in sow gestation diets. The company also has created a cost calculator spreadsheet that helps producers determine their savings by adding Golden DDGS, based on local prices they add to the worksheet.

Swine Extender

IMV Technologies introduces SafeCell, the first fast-dissolving, concentrated, liquid semen extender. SafeCell is unique in its antibiotic formulation. The composition is not toxic to sperm cells and controls the bacterial flora with more efficacy. The extender offers dose precision and improved hygiene. It also helps contain bacterial contamination, which can alter the performance level of the sow herd. SafeCell Plus can be stored at temperatures ranging from +2°C (35.6°F.) to +22°C (71.6°F.), has a shelf life of one year and comes in two holding time versions — SafeCell for 3-4 days and SafeCell Plus for 5-6 days.

Footbath Design

The Loveland 2-in-1 BioSecurity Footbath provides separate wash and decontamination stations. Additionally, scuff ridges in the wash area facilitate dirt and manure removal from boot bottoms. These features address industry concerns over boot wash re-contamination potential and the need to remove manure from boots for thorough disinfection.
