The devastating impact of Foot-and-Mouth disease (FMD) is officially over for the United Kingdom, which has been declared FMD-free.

It is expected to be several months, however, before trading partners recognize the U.K. as fully free of FMD.

To reduce potential risk, a controversial bill has been introduced which would give veterinarians authority to have all animals on a farm slaughtered.

Meanwhile, a pan-Asian strain of FMD continues to spread unchecked across Asia, affecting both cattle and hogs.
