[Washington, DC] [May 5, 2009] -- Olsson Frank Weeda Terman Bode Matz PC, (OFW) the leading law and lobbying firm in the fields of agriculture, food, drugs, medical devices and health care policy, today announced that Gary Baise has joined the firm as a Principal. Mr. Baise will be complementing an already thriving agricultural practice. Baise’s addition brings all of his environmental and agricultural clients into the firm as well as his decades of experience.
Baise specializes in Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act, National Environmental Policy Act, Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act and Solid Waste Disposal Act litigation as well as agricultural corporate governance issues. He has defended clients, including farm producers, in several of the leading wetlands enforcement cases in federal courts. He has served as lead trial counsel for port authorities, housing and commercial developers, municipalities, farm and construction equipment manufacturers, and chemical industries in defending them in federal and state courts in government enforcement activities and citizen suits.
Baise also currently serves as outside General Counsel for the Agricultural Retailers Association, National Association of Wheat Growers, and National Sorghum Producers. Additionally, he serves as the only attorney on USDA’s Agricultural Air Quality Task Force.
In February of this year, Baise led the legal team for Pierson vs Bible Pork, Inc. and won a major jury verdict for animal agriculture in Illinois for Bible Pork, a contract producer for the Maschoffs Inc.
“We could not be happier to have Gary join us,” stated firm Co-Founder Richard Frank. “His experience, particularly with successfully trying major environmental and nuisance cases, in federal and state courts for agricultural and commercial firms will be a great complement to our well established agriculture group.”
Earlier in his career, Mr. Baise served as Chief of Staff to the first US Environmental Protection Agency Administrator and subsequently became director of the Office of Legislation. He served as executive assistant to the Acting Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Associate Deputy Attorney General, and Acting Deputy Attorney General in the US Department of Justice. He has previously served as Chairman of the Virginia Air Pollution Control Board and Vice Chairman of the Virginia Water Control Board by appointment of the Governor of Virginia.
“Olsson Frank Weeda Terman Bode Matz could not be a better fit for me” stated Gary Baise. “My clients will be well served with the exceptional strengths and resources here at the firm. Together, our capabilities are unparalleled. Working on environmental issues facing agriculture with former Secretary of Agriculture Jack Block, former Congressman Charlie Stenholm, former General Counsel to the Senate Select Committee on Nutrition Marshall Matz, and former Assistant Secretary of Agriculture for Food and Consumer Services John Bode will allow OFW to better serve clients in our environmental, agricultural and health practices”.
In addition to representing agriculture interests in the courtroom, Baise is also a farmer. As an Illinois corn and soybean producer, Baise has a hands on perspective to better understand the issues impacting his clients and the industry.
