December Scenario for Pfizer Animal Health’s “Virtual Walk the Pens” Simulator

New York (Nov. 30, 2009)—Pfizer Animal Health is releasing the next scenario for the “Virtual Walk the Pens” simulator. The seventh scenario tests players’ management protocols and decision-making skills in a tough situation.

Typically, the pigs in the virtual barn get both mycoplasma and circovirus vaccines at weaning; however, there was a miscommunication between the wean-to-finish barn and the sow farm, and a vaccination has been missed. The last person to see these pigs reported severe levels of fallouts, some coughing and no treatments had been done. Players must observe the group and make decisions based on their findings. The virtual barn is losing profits, and players must act to minimize those losses.

The simulator is an online educational tool that can be played from any standard computer and is intended to help demonstrate the importance of Individual Pig Care.

“This is a different type of scenario than the previous ones,” says Eric Farrand, Pig Husbandry Team Manager, Pfizer Animal Health. “We’re testing not only their knowledge of individual pig care, but also their ability to manage and correct a challenging situation.”

In the last six months, 2041 players have gone to work in the virtual barn to determine the best course of action for the 2,400 virtual pigs. As the scenarios continue into 2010, more people are encouraged to play and compete for the top scores. Each month’s highest ranking player will receive and Individual Pig Care tool belt to help make work in the real barns a little easier. The next scenario, out Jan. 1, and player rankings can be found at www.individualpigcare.com/WTPGame.

Individual Pig Care™ is an approach that provides for pig needs to maximize potential, producer needs for increased profitability and societal needs for a sustainable, high-quality product, raised with sound husbandry practices.
