The four leaders of the House and Senate Agriculture Committees, Senate Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), Ranking Member Thad Cochran (R-MS), House Chairman Frank Lucas (R-OK), and Ranking Member Collin Peterson (D-MN) met again last week and made significant progress on resolving the differences remaining in the farm bill in an effort to move the bill forward before the end of the year.
Congressmen Lucas and Peterson told the press after the meeting that progress was being made on the bill. Indications are the four leaders have reached a tentative agreement on the commodity title and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). It is now being scored by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) to determine the level of savings. The negotiations will continue into this week in an effort to try and complete the bill before Congress leaves for the Christmas recess or does it carry over into next year. Stay tuned. This week is critical.
