PEDV Research Funding Needed

A group of six senators are urging the Senate Appropriations Committee to include funding for the development of a vaccine for porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) in this year’s agriculture appropriations bill.

The senators in a letter to the Committee said that PEDV has already killed over 6 million pigs since April 2013.

They said, “If PEDV continues to spread at its current rate, many producers could struggle to remain in business.  Control of and response to this and other emerging diseases is critical.”

Those urging funding are Senators Kay Hagan (D-NC), Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Al Franken (D-MN), Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), Joe Donnelly (D-IN), and Amy Klobuchar (D-MN).
