Iowa in the political spotlight

Everyone is waiting for tonight’s results from the Iowa Democratic and Republican caucuses. The question on the Democratic side is will Hillary Clinton survive. Early on she was clearly favored to win Iowa, but Bernie Sanders has made it a very close race and could possibly win. The latest Des Moines Register-Bloomberg Politics poll has Clinton at 45% to 42% for Sanders.

On the Republican side it has been a battle between Donald Trump and Ted Cruz. Biofuels has become a major issue between the two with Trump supporting the renewable fuels standard and ethanol and Cruz opposed. Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad (R) has gone after Cruz over this issue. If Cruz wins, this could have an impact on the importance of the farm vote in the future.

How will the other Republican candidates do, especially Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, Ohio Gov. John Kasich and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush. Will they do well enough to move on to the next primaries and caucuses in New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada, or will some of them drop out of the race.

The Des Moines Register poll has Trump at 28%, Cruz at 23% and Rubio at 15%. Stay tuned, it is the first of a very long year of presidential politics.
