Implement Livestock Disaster Program

A number of U.S. Senators have asked Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, to implement the livestock disaster assistance programs (Livestock Indemnity Program and Livestock Forage Disaster Program) as soon as possible now that the 2014 farm bill has been signed into law.

The Senators said in a letter, “Due to the magnitude of pasture, forage, and livestock losses, and the urgent need for financial assistance these losses have created, we strongly urge you to place implementation of 2014 Farm Bill livestock disaster programs as a top priority.”

The Senators reminded the Secretary of the devastation to pasture, rangeland, and forage the 2012 drought caused and the effects the blizzard last fall had on cattle in Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota. Senators John Thune (R-SD) and Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND) organized the letter.
