House speaker, leadership elections this week

The House Republicans will vote on Oct. 8 for their new leadership team including Speaker, House Majority Leader and House Majority Whip. 

Congressman Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) is the favorite at this time to replace Speaker John Boehner (R-OH). McCarthy currently serves as House Majority Leader and is being challenged by Congressmen Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) and Daniel Webster (R-FL). There are two declared candidates for House Majority Leader – Congressman Steve Scalise (R-LA) and Congressman Tom Price (R-GA).

There are four candidates for Majority Whip – Congressmen Patrick McHenry (R-NC), Markwayne Mullins (R-OK), Dennis Ross (R-FL) and Pete Sessions (R-TX). There continues to be rumors of other possible candidates, and the election for Majority Leader and Majority Whip may be postponed until after Oct. 29.
