Court Allows Others to Join COOL Lawsuit

The U.S. District Court of Columbia is allowing various organizations including the U.S. Cattlemen’s Association (USCA), National Farmers Union (NFU), the American Sheep Industry Association (ASIA) and the Consumer Federation of America (CFA) to intervene in the pending country-of-origin labeling (COOL) lawsuit. USCA said, “We are pleased that we have been allowed to intervene in the litigation and that our materials are now before the court. USCA and its fellow intervenors are strong advocates to ensure that consumers in fact know where their beef is from.”

The court will hear arguments requesting an injunction on the rule on Aug. 27. The lawsuit against COOL was filed July 8 by the American Meat Institute, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, National Pork Producers Council, North American Meat Association and other meat and livestock associations from the United States, Canada and Mexico.
